After all, a home charger is pretty much a necessity at this point: it’s cheaper than charging on the go and way more convenient.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, allow me to give you a quick overview of the general costs that you’ll be looking at for EV charger installation. Of course, these are only averages and will vary along with a smorgasbord of factors, such as charger model and installation complexity, but we find that customers take these figures as a good rule of thumb.

The Role of EV Charger Type
As you might expect, the biggest impact on your overall EV installation cost is the type of EV charger. The faster-charging, more efficient models command a higher price, but their performance often counteracts the cost, particularly if the charging point is going to have multiple users or frequent use. Conversely, the more basic options are best suited to more casual drivers.
Really, it’s a matter of priorities. Some of our customers want to keep things simple, yet others have a specific setup in mind – think connection to their solar system or app integration for smart features. Neither of these are wrong decisions, just options best suited to different lifestyles.
Now, here’s the full breakdown.
7kW Chargers
Chargers around the 7kW mark are by far the most common. Providing decent charging capabilities at 25-30 miles of range per hour, they’re a reliable choice for frequent car commuters, families with multiple vehicles, and for businesses seeking to generate a bit of extra revenue whilst supporting eco-conscious employees. Again, these types of EV chargers work with regular single-phase domestic electricity supply.
22kW Chargers
EV chargers upwards of 11kW are slightly different to the previous options. They require three-phase electricity, which isn’t common among UK homes. Here, you’ll have to upgrade your supply, and that means additional costs.
That said, 22kW models are extremely reliable and fast-charging, making them a cost-effective choice over the long run for frequent drivers, or those settled in their ‘forever home’.
What About 3kW Chargers?
The average equipment cost is around £375, and then £800-£1,200 for the full installation package. We haven’t included them in the main table above because, in our experience with customers, they’re not a good long-term solution.
Models
There’s plenty of debate over the best EV chargers out there. Tesla, Ohme, Simpson & Partners, FastAmps and Zappi are all well-known brands we often work with, some of which have more sophisticated features than others. Tesla is a reliable option for Tesla vehicles and CCS-enabled vehicles, whilst FastAmp is a brilliant compromise between price and performance.

Another option we want to flag – which is, in our opinion, criminally underrated – is Simpson & Partners. Other Factors that Affect EVSE Installation Cost
Besides the EV charger type and brand, there are plenty of other factors influencing EV charger insulation cost – some of which you might not have complete control over, as we’ll shortly reveal.
Property Type
The type of property you live in plays a big part in how straightforward (or not!) your EV charger installation will be.
Modern homes tend to be easier to work with as they usually have newer wiring and space to mount the charger neatly on an outside wall. Older properties, or those with thicker stone walls (we see a fair few of these in Yorkshire), can take a little longer. There’s often more cabling, drilling, and routing needed to get everything safe and tidy.
If you live in a flat or shared building, the setup can get a bit trickier again, especially if there’s no dedicated parking space or you need permission from the landlord or management company. Don’t let that put you off, though – we’ve handled plenty of these jobs without any problems.
Distance from Consumer Unit
This one’s nice and simple. The further away your charger is from your fuse box (consumer unit), the more cable and trunking we’ll need to run, and that adds to both the time and cost.
A charger mounted right outside the wall where your consumer unit sits is the ideal, as it keeps installation neat, tidy and cost-effective. But if your drive or parking spot is a fair distance from the house, it just means a bit more work.
Wall vs Ground Mount
Most home chargers are wall-mounted because they’re more affordable and make use of existing space. But if you’d prefer a free-standing (ground-mounted) setup – maybe at the end of a drive or in a carport – that’s another possibility.
Just bear in mind that ground mounting needs additional groundwork, cabling, and sometimes a small concrete plinth for stability. It’s a slightly bigger job, but it can look really smart when done right.
Wi-Fi Connection/Stability
Many modern EV chargers are “smart” these days, meaning they need a stable Wi-Fi connection to make the most of the features like scheduled charging, energy monitoring, or integration with solar panels. If your Wi-Fi signal doesn’t quite reach your drive, we might need to add a booster or recommend an Ethernet connection. It’s not a huge cost, but worth knowing about upfront.
Consumer Unit Upgrades or Fusebox Changes
If your current fuse box isn’t up to modern standards or doesn’t have spare capacity, you’ll need to upgrade or add protection devices to safely support the charger. It’s not the most exciting part of the job, but it’s absolutely essential for safety and compliance with current regulations.
Labour and Time
Not to be Captain Obvious, but the more complex the installation is – i.e., the more labour and time required of your electrician – the greater the quote will cost. Easy jobs, like adding a conventional charger to a modern property, are relatively quick, whilst supply upgrades with 22kW chargers will require a bigger upfront investment.
Another thing to note is that geographical region also has some bearing on your EV installation cost: higher-demand areas, places where the cost-of-living is higher or rural locations all bring an impact. Here, it’s a good idea to explore multiple quotes or seek a local, certified sparky with competitive pricing.
Aesthetic Extras
Finally, the fun one! Did you know that many EV installers in the UK can colour-match your charger to your car? Simply pass on the RAL number, and the professionals will see to the rest. Of course, this is completely optional, but if you’re a car buff, it’s well worth knowing!

Hidden or Unexpected Costs to Watch For
A good EV charger installer should be transparent with their pricing, but unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world. When getting quotes, watch out for companies that charge extra when they get there; without naming names, some will only allow a certain distance or method of installing the charger within their standard packages, and then up the price to cover deviations from this.
Government EV Charger Grants (2025)
One final thing to plug into your calculations is how much you can knock off the EV installation cost via government grants.
Renters or flat owners can get either £350 or 75% off the cost to buy and install a socket, whichever amount is lower, while landlords can get the same or up to £30,000 or 75% off the cost of the wider infrastructure work required to install multiple charge point sockets. Even businesses can benefit via the Workplace Charging Scheme, also capped at 75%.
Home vs Public Charging: Is It Worth It?
Home charging points are absolutely worth it if you use them. You need only compare the charging rates between home and public charging points to see why: yes, the average cost per unit of electricity at home is 28.3p versus an average of 52p (slow/fast) or 76p (ultra-fast) out and about. For a more specific look, you can use home charging calculators like this one from Zapmap.
Most drivers will be able to save up to £1,100 a year as running an EV can cost as little as 2 pence per mile. Factor in the government’s recent efforts to cut red tape around chargepoint installation, and it’s even more worth it.
